In my humble opinion, these movies still hold up when viewed today. So dust off your VHS or DVD copies, or find a streaming entertainment provider to hook you up with any one of these films.

Without further adieu, let’s explore these timeless 80s and 90s love movies that still steal our hearts.

1. Romeo + Juliet (1996)

  • Synopsis: A modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy, set in the hip 1990s but retaining the original dialogue. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes star as the ill-fated lovers from rival families.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It showcases the timeless nature of love and conflict, resonating with the eternal theme that love knows no boundaries. Not to mention it is one of the most enduring love stories in the English Language. It did the unthinkable for many a high-schooler back in the day; it made Shakespeare cool. Personally, I didn’t need too much convincing, I actually enjoyed reading most of the Shakespearean plays that were part of our curriculum. So much so that I took a whole course in University about Shakespearean Literature. Not to mention, that’s where I met my partner ❤️.

  • Did you know: The pool scene required the actors to spend so much time in water that they had to be treated for water-induced skin problems.

2. My Own Private Idaho (1991)

  • Synopsis: This avant-garde road movie directed by Gus Van Sant stars River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves as two friends embarking on a journey of personal discovery. Phoenix’s character, a young street hustler suffering from narcolepsy, searches for his estranged mother, while Reeves plays the rebellious scion of a wealthy family. Their on screen journey is a powerful exploration of friendship, love, and the quest for home.

  • Why It’s Relevant: “My Own Private Idaho” broke new ground in its portrayal of LGBTQ+ themes at a time when mainstream cinema rarely addressed such topics. It offers a heartfelt and humanizing depiction of its characters’ struggles and desires. Making it a landmark film in the representation of same-sex love.

  • Did you know: River Phoenix’s portrayal of his character’s vulnerability and his improvised campfire monologue, where he confesses his love for Reeves’ character, were highly praised and are considered some of the finest moments of his career.

3. Pretty Woman (1990)

  • Synopsis: A wealthy businessman hires a Hollywood sex worker for a week, only to fall in love with her in what was dubbed a modern Cinderella story when it hit theatres in 1990.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It challenges societal norms and reminds us that love can blossom in the most unexpected places. Not to mention, Julia Roberts steals the show and went on to become one of the best actors of the era. No offence to Mr Geere, but I always found he and Ms Roberts real-life age gap a little cringey. Thankfully in the years that followed, Hollywood has slowly moved away from some longstanding gender-based casting biases.

  • Did you know: The necklace scene was improvised, capturing Julia Roberts’ genuine surprise and laughter.

4. Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)

  • Synopsis: After high school graduation, an eclectic group of students navigates love, dreams, and relationships during one wild party. This movie is pure cheese, but I love it. I used to call it a guilty pleasure, but now I simply own my affinity for it. It takes me right back to high school and grad, every time I think about it. Admittedly, I’m also a sucker for a good underdog story.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It perfectly captures the hopes, dreams, and anxieties of transitioning from high school to adult life. Emphasizing that it’s never too late to go after what you want.

  • Did you know: The film’s title is taken from a song by The Replacements, which is fitting for a movie heavily influenced by 90s music culture.

5. Ghost (1990)

  • Synopsis: A man’s spirit stays behind to protect his love after his tragic death, communicating through a psychic.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It demonstrates that love transcends physical boundaries and the material world. Oh yeah, and it features Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg, and Demi Moore all in their prime! As much as I used to act like I was too cool to enjoy this movie, it actually gets me in the feels. I still get goosebumps watching Sam overcome the distance between the physical and metaphysical world in order to save Molly.

  • The iconic pottery wheel scene was filmed in just one take.

6. Titanic (1997)

  • Synopsis: A poor artist and a rich young woman find love on the doomed Titanic, facing societal pressures and impending disaster.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It’s a reminder of love’s power to cross social divides and the human spirit’s resilience. Jack and Rose inspired many a love story since this blockbuster hit theatres, and I’d venture to guess, it will go on to still inspire more.

  • Did you know: The sketch of Rose was actually drawn by director James Cameron.

7. Love Jones (1997)

  • Synopsis: Set in Chicago, this film follows the romance between a photographer and a writer. It explores themes of love, ambition, and artistic expression within the African American community.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It offers a nuanced portrayal of love and relationships among African American characters. A refreshing departure from the predominantly white narratives of the era.

  • Did you know: The title “Love Jones” is slang for an intense craving or longing for romance or sex. Which is fitting due to the film’s exploration of love and desire.

8. The Princess Bride (1987)

  • Synopsis: A fairy tale adventure about true love and high adventure. The plot revolves around Wesley’s quest to rescue his beloved Princess Buttercup from the obnoxious Prince Humperdinck.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It’s a celebration of love’s triumph over seemingly insurmountable obstacles, wrapped in humour and adventure. It is the perfect blend of weird and wonderful 80s hilarity, storytelling and movie making magic. Andre the Giant also proved he could do more than Butterfly Suplex his opponents by accepting an acting gig in the movie. I always thought that the 80s WWF Superstar did a bang up job playing his part in this epic movie.

  • Did you know: The Cliffs of Insanity are actually the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. (I’ve actually been there. Ireland is where my partner and I spent our honeymoon. These cliffs are breathtaking! The cows that graze right up to the cliff edges made me anxious watching them though. They’re much braver than I am.)

9. Notting Hill (1999)

  • Synopsis: A British bookseller’s life turns upside down when he falls for an American movie star. The film demonstrates that love can bridge the gap between two very different worlds.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It’s a heartwarming reminder that true love doesn’t care about fame, fortune, or societal status. Almost a decade after Pretty Woman endeared her into our hearts, Julia Roberts is still fire in this film. Hugh Grant is not too shabby either. What ever happened to that guy?

  • Did you know: The “blue door” is the real entrance to the movie’s director Roger Michel‘s home.

10. Beauty and the Beast (1991)

  • Synopsis: An enchanting story where the love between Belle and the Beast breaks a curse, transforming him back into a prince.

  • Why It’s Relevant: It teaches that true beauty comes from within and that love can transform us in the most unexpected ways. It was a Disney Movie that captured the hearts of viewers of all ages. I dare you to be able to think about this movie without the music from the film creeping into your memory. I was always taken aback that the star of Murder She Wrote could sing too.

  • Did you know: This was the first animated film ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

* Obligatory Mention: Dirty Dancing (1987)

  • Synopsis: A coming-of-age story set in a summer resort, where against all odds, Baby falls for her dance instructor Johnny.
  • Why It’s Relevant: It’s a tale of love that transcends class boundaries. Teaching us to carry watermelons and dance like nobody’s watching. At least that’s what everyone tells me. I have to admit, I’ve never seen this one. However, I know if I left it off this list, I’d run the risk of losing my reputation as an expert on 80s and 90s nostalgia. I understand that this movie has a special place in the hearts and minds of many of my peers.

  • Did you know: The lift scene was never rehearsed, making its flawless execution in the final cut all the more remarkable.

Conclusion

These films remind us that the essence of love, with all its quirks, challenges, and triumphs, remains unchanged by time.

They capture our hearts with stories that celebrate the strength, resilience, and beauty of love in all its forms.

  • While most of these films are suitable for a wide audience, parental guidance is recommended for younger viewers due to varying content.

Did you actually watch and enjoy all these gushy movies?

  • ‘Fer sure I did. Most, more than once. Except for Dirty Dancing. I haven’t actually seen it. Should I? Probably. Will I? Time will tell.

Why isn’t there more diversity in the stories, actors, and movie makers on this list?

  • Admittedly when I was an avid movie consumer in the late 80s and early 90s, most of what I watched were stories from a white-dominated Hollywood. I regret not being more aware of this and not seeking a more diversified movie experience during my school years. I’d love for anyone who has recommendations of retro romantic comedies or love stories featuring a more diverse cast, producers, directors and stories, to please give me some recommendations. I am interested in revisiting this time period and experiencing the many great movies that I no doubt missed out on back in the day.
